Murray Central

The Murray Central station is just west of the IHC Medical Center on 5400 South in Murray.  This station serves passengers of the Blue Line to Sandy and the Red Line to Daybreak, and will also serve FrontRunner when the south extension opens in December 2012.

Modern art or concrete pilings mistakenly poured in the wrong place?

Artwork embedded in the sidewalk.

Construction on the FrontRunner station.

Interesting old building south of the station on the other side of the bridge.

TRAX, FrontRunner and Union Pacific bridges over 5400 South.

Fashion Place West

The Fashion Place West station is a unique and busy place.  This is the only TRAX stop with 2 center platforms and 3 sets of rails.  The east tracks are for northbound trains from Sandy and Daybreak.  The center tracks are for southbound trains to Sandy, and the west tracks are for southbound trains to Daybreak.
Prior to construction of the Red Line (to Daybreak), the track from the maintenance facility (south-west of this station) connected to the main tracks north of the station, crossing 6400 S and running through what is now an additional park-and-ride lot.
The Red Line tracks now join the Blue Line tracks south of 6400 S.
Interesting art work on the station platform.
A Red-Line train merges on to the Blue Line tracks.

Bingham Junction

The Bingham Junction station is next to hundreds of condos, townhomes and apartments.  Looks like an excellent place to live if you can commute to work downtown or near another TRAX stop.
Construction of the new IHC warehouse is complete north of the tracks.  There is a WinCo grocery story, gas station and strip mall less than a mile to the north.
Plenty of space for future development.

West Jordan City Center

The West Jordan City Center is directly across the street from the West Jordan City government buildings, West Jordan Police Dept. and Salt Lake Community College Jordan Campus.  It is close to several fast food restaurants and a Sizzler restaurant (no beer served at this location).

Perhaps not a destination to visit on a whim, but if planned ahead there are many events happening near this TRAX stop:

The West Jordan Veterans Memorial Park hosts Car Shows and movies in the park.  Please check the West Jordan City website for details.  This park also boasts the largest playground in Utah with over 12,000 square feet of play surface.  There are tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts and a volleyball court.

The West Jordan Farmers Market is right next to this TRAX station.  Every Tuesday from 3:00pm - 7:00pm through October.

The West Jordan Arena hosts concerts and rodeos.  Please check their website for upcoming events.

Sugar Factory Road

The Sugar Factory station is in the middle of a residential area.  The parking lot was over 50% full, nice to see so many people taking the train to work.

Jordan Valley

Unless you work at Jordan Valley Hospital I can't find any reason to be here.  Grafitti on white vinyl fences and nothing else for 2 miles.  The closest point of interest is another TRAX stop.

I walked for 2 miles and found Hot Dog On A Stick.

It is hard to tell how busy this stop is on a weekday.  Cars are parked in the streets and the parking garages are empty (they charge for parking).  Perhaps if UTA allowed free parking in their otherwise unused new structures more commuters would take the train.

4773 W Old Bingham Highway

This is the first of 4 stops west of Bangerter Highway.  This station is roughly 1.2 miles from the nearest retail area which includes a Smith's grocery store, a Wendy's, McDonalds, Subway and Little Caesars Pizza.  To take advantage of the sidewalks you'll have to cross Old Bingham Highway.  There aren't any marked pedestrian crosswalks.  Also there is no sidewalk for a portion of the walk.

5651 W Old Bingham Highway

Maybe this station will get a real name when there is more development around the area.  Currently there are no shopping or dining experiences to be had.  Enjoy the views of the copper mine.

South Jordan Parkway

The South Jordan Parkway station is about 1.75 miles from Oquirrh Lake.  So bring your bike and explore the trails that circle the lake.  Or ride from the north side to the south side and stop at Soda Row for dinner or drinks, then board the train at the Daybreak Parkway station to return home.

While at the station take note of the "flying" art formation.  There are 10 unique sheet-metal angels(?) that swivel with the direction of the wind.  There is interesting artwork on many TRAX platforms, something to watch for when you aren't in a rush.

Sailing on Oquirrh Lake. There is also a playground
and a beach on the lake if you like to bring children.

Daybreak Parkway

Daybreak Parkway is one of two stations in the Daybreak master-planned community.  This station is also the end of the Red Line.  A walk of .8 miles takes you to a retail center called Soda Row.  Here you will find a restaurant, bakery, gelato shop and a sports bar:

Tio's Mexican Restaurant
I haven't eaten here yet.  I'll update this post when I can tell you more about it.  According to their sign they are closed on Sundays so plan accordingly.

Swirly Girls Gourmet Bakery
Baked goods and sandwiches.  They even have a small selection of gluten-free items.  Closed Sundays.

Cafe Bella Rue (formerly San Gelato Cafe)
Sandwiches, pizza, calzone and delicious gelato.  Most gelato flavors are gluten-free.  Closed Sundays.

The Break Sports Grill
Great place for a cold draft beer.  Indoor and patio seating.  Family friendly, and open on Sundays!

Pinyon fire above Herriman seen from the
Daybreak Parkway TRAX station.

When walking to Soda Row from the Trax station, take the asphalt paved path from the light (Duckhorn Rd) just south-east of the station toward the apartment complex.  When you arrive at the road (Lake Run Rd) turn toward Daybreak Parkway so you can take advantage of the afternoon shade of the apartment buildings.
